Best free alternative to Todoist: Handful
Todoist's free plan stops at 5 personal projects, and custom reminders, the calendar layout and task durations need Pro. Handful, from the AppHunt team, is a to-do list for iPhone, iPad and Mac whose free version includes projects, reminders and repeating tasks, and it can import a Todoist backup. With the AppHunt promo code you get the full version of Handful for free, for good.
Yes, Todoist is free: the Beginner plan gives you up to five projects of your own, Smart Quick Add, shared and assigned tasks, and list and board layouts. Pro, Todoist's premium plan, raises the limits and adds the calendar layout, custom and location reminders, deadlines and unlimited Ramble voice capture; it costs $7 a month or $60 a year on Todoist's site and $6.99 or $59.99 in the US App Store (prices on October 30, 2026; they may change).
Is Todoist free?
Todoist's Beginner plan is free. It gives you up to 5 active personal projects, sub-tasks, sections, labels and priorities, due dates and recurring dates, Smart Quick Add, list and board layouts, 3 saved filter views, comments, shared projects and assigned tasks, a free team workspace with lower limits, automatic reminders for tasks that have a date and time, and links with email, calendars and other tools. The limits show elsewhere: 7 days of activity history, 5 MB file uploads, and 10 Ramble voice-capture sessions a month. Custom, time-based and location-based reminders, the calendar layout, task durations, deadlines and automatic backups are Pro features, which is most likely what reviewers mean when they say even simple reminders need payment.
How much does Todoist cost?
Pro raises the limits to 300 personal projects and 150 filter views, and adds the calendar layout, task durations and time-blocking, deadlines, custom, time-based, location-based and recurring reminders, full activity history, daily automatic backups, Project Insights, unlimited Ramble voice capture, and the Task Assist and Email Assist features that take over busywork and turn forwarded emails into tasks. Todoist's site lists Pro at $7 a month or $60 a year ($5 a month billed yearly), the price since December 10, 2025, up from $5 and $48; Business is $10 per user a month, or $8 billed yearly. The US App Store lists Todoist Pro Monthly at $6.99 and Yearly at $59.99, and shows the same two prices again under Pro Legacy, a plan that keeps older App Store subscribers on their current price. Todoist doesn't support Apple Family Sharing, so each person needs a subscription of their own. These are US App Store prices on October 30, 2026, and they may change.

Handful or Todoist: how they compare
Handful, made by the AppHunt team, covers the everyday part of Todoist without a subscription. You write a task in plain words and Handful reads the date, time, repeat, tag, project and a time estimate from that one line. Projects and areas, checklists, reminders, repeating tasks, widgets, a focus timer and a Mac app that syncs through iCloud are in the free version. Its main idea is Today: it adds up your estimates and tells you whether the day fits, and what you don't finish moves to tomorrow without red overdue counters. Handful reads a Todoist backup, turning sections into headings, so moving over doesn't mean retyping. The paid Handful Plus brings the Apple Watch app, location reminders, alarms, themes, calendar events, voice capture, photo and file attachments, and shared projects with assigned tasks. It costs $29.99 a year or $69.99 once in the US, against $60 a year for Todoist Pro, and AppHunt has a promo code that unlocks it. Handful does much less than Todoist, though: it runs only on Apple devices, with no Android, Windows, Linux or web version, it needs iOS 26 or later, its listing names no third-party integrations at all, and it is new, with no ratings yet against Todoist's 130,269.

How much does Todoist cost?
Todoist Pro is $7 a month or $60 a year ($5 a month billed yearly) on Todoist's site, and Business is $10 or $8 per user a month. US App Store prices on October 30, 2026; they may change.
Is there a Todoist promo code?
AppHunt has no promo code for Todoist. Todoist says it has no separate discounts for students, families or non-profits; its promotions arrive as links that apply at checkout on its website, you can use one every 12 months, and they can't be applied to an App Store subscription. Paying yearly is the main saving: $60 instead of $84 at the monthly price, about 30% less. If you want a to-do list whose paid version a code unlocks, AppHunt has a promo code for Handful Plus.
Does Todoist have a free trial?
Yes. Todoist Pro has a 7-day free trial for anyone who hasn't tried Pro before, limited to one trial per account. In the iPhone app, tap Browse, then the gear icon, open the Subscription tab and tap Try Pro for free. When the trial ends, Pro starts automatically unless you cancel; on iPhone you cancel from the Subscriptions screen of your Apple account (Settings, your name, Subscriptions), and Pro stays on until the trial ends. A trial can't be paused, and if you don't subscribe the account returns to the free Beginner plan.
How do I cancel Todoist Pro?
For a subscription bought in the App Store, open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose Todoist and cancel; Pro continues until the billing period ends, then the account returns to Beginner. If you pay on the Todoist website, use Settings, then the Subscription tab and Cancel plan. A yearly plan you cancel in the first 30 days after buying or renewing it can be refunded in full (Apple handles that for App Store purchases); monthly payments aren't refundable unless the law where you live requires it.
What do reviews of the Todoist app say?
Todoist has 130,269 ratings averaging 4.8 in the US App Store. Of the 250 most recent US reviews, written from December 14, 2025 to October 28, 2026, 153 give five stars. People praise how fast tasks go in, the flexibility of projects, labels and filters, the syncing across devices and a free plan that is enough for many. The complaints are price, with some calling $60 a year too much for a to-do list, reminders and notifications that arrive late or are easy to miss, reminders locked behind Pro, no Family Sharing, and trouble cancelling or getting a purchase recognized.
What is the best free alternative to Todoist?
For an iPhone, iPad and Mac to-do list, Handful, from the AppHunt team, is free to download, with projects, reminders and repeating tasks in the free version, and it can import a Todoist backup. AppHunt has a promo code that unlocks Handful Plus, which brings sharing, assigned tasks, voice capture, calendar events and the Apple Watch app. Handful is Apple-only and needs iOS 26, so Todoist remains the choice if you use Android, Windows or the web. Our list of free to-do list apps has more options.
