Adobe Acrobat Reader: what's free, what's paid and a free alternative
Adobe Inc. · Business · ★ 4.6, 664K ratings in the US App Store · Free to download
Yes: on iPhone and iPad, Acrobat Reader costs nothing for opening, reading, commenting on, filling in and signing PDFs. Editing, converting, combining and the other advanced tools are paid; the US App Store lists Acrobat Premium at $9.99 a week, $12.99 or $14.99 a month, or $48.99 or $69.99 a year (US prices on October 29, 2026; they may change).
Is Adobe Acrobat Reader free?
Without paying, the app opens PDFs and lets you read them in Liquid Mode, which re-flows a page so it fits a phone screen, search inside a document, highlight passages and leave comments or sticky notes. Fill & Sign costs nothing as well: type into a form, add your signature and send the result. You can share a PDF so others can view it or comment, and open files stored in OneDrive, Dropbox or Google Drive. Adobe lists all of this as free, on iPhone and iPad alike.
How much does Adobe Acrobat Reader cost?
Paying unlocks the tools that change a file. Acrobat Premium, the subscription Adobe sells inside the app, adds editing of text and images, PDF creation, export to Word, Excel or PowerPoint, merging files, reordering pages, compression and password protection; Adobe says some of these also work on desktop and the web, with limits. Acrobat Pro is the full plan, covering the desktop app for Windows and Mac as well as the web and mobile: adobe.com charges $19.99 a month for it on an annual plan billed monthly; Acrobat Standard is $14.99 and Acrobat Studio, which adds AI Assistant, is $24.99. A Pro, Standard or Studio plan bought from Adobe works in the app too: sign in with your Adobe account to use the paid tools it includes. The App Store also lists AI Assistant for Acrobat at $6.99 and three more items priced $9.99 to $12.99 without saying what each one includes. These are US prices on October 29, 2026, and they may change.

Best free alternative to Adobe Acrobat Reader: Folbrio
Folbrio, from the AppHunt team, does the job Acrobat charges for on a phone: changing the PDF itself. Tap a paragraph and type the new wording, add or swap an image, draw your signature, reorder, rotate or delete pages, pull in pages from another PDF, and run on-device OCR on a scan so its words can be edited. It's available on iPhone, iPad and Mac and is completely free, with no subscription, no account and no code needed. The trade-offs are real: files stay in a separate library on each device, with no Adobe cloud storage or sync, no shared reviews, no conversion to Word or Excel and no AI Assistant; a drawn signature is not a certificate-based e-signature; and Folbrio imports only unencrypted PDFs no larger than 40 MB or longer than 200 pages. If your work runs through Adobe's cloud and the rest of its ecosystem, Acrobat remains the better fit.

Adobe Acrobat Reader: questions and answers
Is Adobe Acrobat Reader free?
Yes. The app is free to download on iPhone and iPad, and reading, searching, highlighting, commenting, filling in forms and signing with Fill & Sign stay free. You need a subscription only for tools that change or convert the file, such as editing text, exporting to Word, combining PDFs or OCR.
How much does Adobe Acrobat Reader cost?
Reader itself costs nothing. In the US App Store, Acrobat Premium is listed at $9.99 a week, $12.99 or $14.99 a month, and $48.99 or $69.99 a year, and AI Assistant for Acrobat at $6.99. On adobe.com, Acrobat Standard is $14.99 a month, Acrobat Pro $19.99 and Acrobat Studio $24.99, each on an annual plan billed monthly, and those plans also cover the desktop apps and the web. US prices on October 29, 2026; they may change.
Is there an Adobe Acrobat Reader promo code?
AppHunt has no promo code for Acrobat; its paid plans are sold by Adobe on adobe.com and billed by Apple in the App Store. Adobe's plans page has a separate tab with prices for students and teachers. If you were looking for a code in order to edit PDFs, Folbrio does that at no cost on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and no code is needed.
Does Adobe Acrobat Reader have a free trial?
Adobe's App Store listing offers a 7-day free trial. Its help pages add that mobile trials usually come with annual plans, are not offered in every region, and become a paid subscription unless you cancel before the seven days are over; Adobe emails a reminder before the trial ends. Acrobat Pro bought on adobe.com also starts with a 7-day trial, then costs $19.99 a month on the annual plan billed monthly (US price on October 29, 2026; it may change).
How do I cancel Adobe Acrobat?
If you subscribed in the app, Apple bills you: on your iPhone or iPad open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose the Acrobat subscription and cancel it. In the app, the profile icon, then Subscriptions and Manage subscriptions, leads to the same App Store screen, and Apple handles refunds for these purchases. If you bought from Adobe, cancel on the web: open your account at account.adobe.com, pick Manage plan, then Cancel your plan. Adobe refunds most plans in full within 14 days; after that, cancelling an annual plan billed monthly can mean a fee of up to half the remaining commitment.
What is the best free alternative to Adobe Acrobat Reader?
For reading and signing, Reader's free level already does the job. For editing, which is where Acrobat starts charging, Folbrio, the AppHunt team's PDF editor, is completely free and available for iPhone, iPad and Mac: it edits existing text, adds images and signatures, organizes pages and runs OCR on your device. It doesn't replace Adobe's cloud storage, Office conversion or signature requests.
