Best free alternative to Unrot: Mute
Unrot says a subscription is required for everything, and US reviewers in October 2026 mention about $70 a year. Mute, from the AppHunt team, blocks apps through Screen Time with timed pauses and schedules for free, but it can't make you earn your scroll. With the AppHunt promo code you get 1 year of Mute premium for free.
No. Unrot's App Store description says an active subscription is required to use its features, and its website doesn't publish prices or mention a free tier. The US App Store lists Full Access at $9.99, $13.99, $29.99, $34.99 and $69.99, plus plans at $29.99 and $49.99 with no period shown; reviewers mention about $10 a week and $70 a year, and one a 3-day trial. These are US App Store prices on November 2, 2026, and they may change.
Is Unrot free?
Unrot is free to download, but it doesn't have a free version. The last line of its App Store description says an active subscription is required for the features it describes, and the developer's website says nothing about pricing, a trial or a free tier. Reviews from October 2026 agree: a dozen of the 50 newest are one-star, and most of those are about the paywall, with comments such as paid access only, a long setup before the price appears and no free plan for students or younger users.
How much does Unrot cost?
Unrot's subscription covers its whole system: timer and photo habits, focus sessions, locking apps, spending coins to unlock them, the little buddy character and streaks. The US App Store lists Full Access at $9.99, $13.99, $29.99, $34.99 and $69.99, Access to all premium features at $29.99 and Access to all features at $49.99, without naming a billing period for any of them. Reviewers in October 2026 say the offer is about $10 a week or $70 a year, which match the $9.99 and $69.99 entries, and one says the free trial lasts 3 days. The developer's website doesn't confirm any of that. These are US App Store prices on November 2, 2026, and they may change.

Mute or Unrot: how they compare
Mute, made by the AppHunt team, replaces the locking part of Unrot without a subscription. It uses Apple's Screen Time controls to shield the apps and sites you choose, for a timed pause of 15, 25, 45 or 60 minutes or on recurring schedules, and Essentials only mode keeps named apps such as messages or maps available. Blocking, schedules and usage reports are free, with no account or ads, and Mute Plus, an optional AI-built plan of breaks and limits, is free with AppHunt's promo code at apphunt.app/app/mute-plus. Unrot's central idea is missing from Mute: there are no coins, no habits to log with a timer or photo, no tasks library, no buddy character and no streaks, and nothing to spend on a favorite app. It also gives you less friction, because a manual pause can be ended from Mute's Today screen. If the earn-then-scroll trade is what works for you, Unrot is the app to keep. Mute is iPhone only and new, with no ratings yet.
