Brick: what's free, what the device costs and a free alternative
Brick LLC (Wisconsin) · Productivity · ★ 4.9, 59K ratings in the US App Store · Free to download
The Brick app is free and has no subscription or in-app purchases, but it is built to work with the Brick, a small device that costs $59 on the maker's US store (Brick Night is $129, and the two together $169; US prices on October 29, 2026, which may change). Without a Brick you can still start a block from the app, but ending it early takes a tap on the device or one of five Emergency Unbricks.
Is Brick free?
Downloading and setting up the app costs nothing: you make a Brick account with your email, allow Screen Time access and build up to 10 modes that block chosen apps and Safari sites, or block everything except the apps you keep. Brick's help pages are clear about what works without the device. Holding the button in the app starts a session from anywhere, and a schedule that has an end time switches blocking on and off at the times you set. Ending a session before that takes a tap on a Brick or one of five Emergency Unbricks, which are meant for real emergencies; a fresh set can be requested only once all five are gone. The US App Store lists no in-app purchases.
How much does Brick cost?
What you pay for is the hardware, once. On getbrick.com a Brick costs $59, with 10% off two or more. Brick Night, a Bluetooth unit for the bedroom that keeps your chosen apps blocked while you are within its range during the hours you pick, costs $129, and the pair costs $169 instead of $188. Accessories include the Brick Case at $39 and the Brick Mount at $15, and US shipping is free on orders above $75. The Brick has no battery, needs no charging or Wi-Fi, and works by touch: tap your phone on it to start a session and tap again to end it, and Brick suggests keeping it in another room. Brick includes lifetime use of the app with no recurring fees, a 30-day money-back guarantee and a lifetime manufacturer guarantee. These are US prices on October 29, 2026, and they may change.
Best free alternative to Brick: Mute
Mute, made by the AppHunt team, handles the blocking without any hardware. It uses Apple's Screen Time controls to shield the apps you pick, for a quick 25-minute pause (or 15, 45 or 60 minutes) or on daily schedules, and its Essentials only mode keeps the apps you mark as essential, such as messages, maps or banking, open while the rest stay blocked. Blocking is free, and Mute Plus, a seven-day program built around your habits, is free with AppHunt's promo code from apphunt.app/app/mute-plus. What Mute can't copy is Brick's physical step: Mute lives on the phone, so you can end a pause on its Today screen or turn every restriction off in Settings, and sticking to it is up to you. Mute is for iPhone only, and nothing in it matches Brick Night's Bluetooth bedroom zone; the closest thing is a bedtime schedule.

About Brick
Brick, from Brick LLC of Wisconsin, is an app blocker built on friction: the off switch sits in a small magnetic block rather than on the phone, so unlocking your apps means walking to wherever you left it. Its app, Brick - Ditch Distractions, has 58,883 ratings averaging 4.9 in the US App Store, runs on iPhones with iOS 18.0 or later and on Android phones with NFC, and was last updated on October 26, 2026. Strict Mode can keep you from deleting the app during a session. It suits people who have tried Screen Time limits and keep tapping past them, and households that want phone-free stretches at home.

What is the best free alternative to Brick?
If you want blocking without buying hardware, Mute is a free iPhone app blocker made by the AppHunt team. It uses Apple's Screen Time controls for a quick 25-minute pause or daily schedules, and your essential apps stay available. The difference is friction: Brick makes you fetch a device to unlock, while Mute can be switched off on the phone, so it suits people who need a nudge rather than a lock.
