Answers to common questions about Gauge, the automatic mileage log for iPhone and iPad. Can't find what you need? Email support@apphunt.app.

Getting started

Choose the country where you file taxes (it sets the rate and the tax year), then allow location While Using the App and, when iOS asks, Change to Always Allow. Allow Motion & Fitness too. Then just drive: each drive appears in Drives when you park.

How drives are detected

When you park, the app sets a geofence around the car. When you leave it, iOS wakes the app, the GPS comes on, and speed and motion tell whether you're driving. A drive ends after you've been parked for 3 minutes (change it in Settings; gig drivers may prefer 20–30 minutes to keep a shift in one piece), or sooner once you walk away. The first stretch of a drive noticed late is estimated from where you parked and marked as estimated.

Permissions

  • Location: Always lets the app notice drives while it's closed. With While Using, start drives yourself.
  • Precise Location must be on: approximate location is too coarse to measure a drive.
  • Motion & Fitness tells a drive from a walk or a bike ride.
  • Background App Refresh should stay on so iOS can wake the app.

Settings → Status and permissions shows each of them and what the app did lately.

Classifying

Swipe a drive right for Business or left for Personal, or answer right from the notification. Tap a drive for other categories (commute, medical, charity, moving), a purpose, parking and tolls. Tap a start or end place to name it (Home, Office, a client). With Premium, a place can give its drives a category, work hours mark drives business or personal, and a trip you classified the same way twice classifies itself.

Starting drives with your car

In the Shortcuts app, create a personal automation: CarPlay → Connects → Run Immediately with the action Start a drive, and another for Disconnects with End the drive. The same works with your car's Bluetooth, or with the Driving Focus turning on and off.

Reports and rates

Reports shows totals for a month, a tax year or any dates, valued at the official rate on each drive's date. Export a PDF report or a Spreadsheet (Premium). Set the report and address language in Settings: an IRS log can be in English even if your iPhone is in another language. Settings → Rates shows the official rates with their source; tap one to use your own.

Gauge Premium

Free: 40 recorded drives a month, trips added by hand, totals and export of all your data. Premium adds unlimited drives, PDF and spreadsheet reports, auto-classification and several vehicles: $39.99 a year with a 7-day free trial, $5.99 a month, or $79.99 once for life.

Restore a purchase

On a new device, tap Restore purchases in Settings or on the Premium screen, with the Apple Account you bought Gauge Premium with.

Cancel a subscription

Open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions → Gauge, and tap Cancel Subscription at least a day before it renews or the free trial ends. Deleting the app doesn't cancel a subscription. For a refund, contact Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Troubleshooting

  • A drive is missing: check Settings → Status and permissions. Location must be Always with Precise Location on. Add the drive by hand with + → Add a past trip.
  • A stop split one drive in two: open the first drive and tap Join with the next drive, or raise the parking time in Settings.
  • A bike ride or a train was logged: delete it, or mark it personal. Allowing Motion & Fitness prevents most of these.
  • Addresses show in another language: change Settings → Address language.
  • Something else: Settings → Status → Share diagnostics sends a log of wake-ups and drives, without any locations, with your email to support.
