Questions about Gauge
How does it know I'm driving?
When you park, the app sets a geofence around the car. Leaving it (or a significant move, or the end of a visit) wakes the app, which turns on the GPS and checks the speed and the motion sensor. If it's a drive, it records it until you park; if it's a walk or a bike ride, the GPS goes off again.
Why does it need location Always?
To notice that a drive started while the app is closed. Locations stay on your iPhone and are never shared. With While Using, the app still works: start and end drives yourself, or with a Shortcuts automation.
What about the battery?
While you're not driving the app uses the low-power geofence and significant-change services only. The GPS is on only during a drive, like a navigation app, and off as soon as you park.
Which rates are included?
Official per-mile or per-kilometre rates for 20 countries, with the dates they apply: the United States (IRS), United Kingdom (HMRC), Canada (CRA), Australia (ATO), New Zealand, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Czechia, Slovakia and South Africa. You can set your own rate for any category.
Is this tax advice?
No. Gauge keeps an accurate record and values it at the rate you choose. Ask your accountant what you can claim.
Can I add a drive I forgot?
Yes. Add a past trip, pick the two places, and the road distance is looked up for you.
